The Internal Strifes: The Defiance of Çandarlı to Mehmed, In contrast to Sultan Mehmed’s broader aspirations, the seed of disturbances began to sprout. Çandarlı, who had grown tired of Mehmed’s expansionistic vision, sought to turn the capital upside down. He called upon the Janissaries, the upper crust of the Ottoman Empire’s army, prompting them to rise in rebellion against the Sultan, thus disrupting order in the city.
In light of such a defection, Mehmed had no option other than rising against forces that were originally meant to shield him. A confrontation between Mehmed’s loyal troops and the renegade Janissaries ensued. The Sultan was determined to crush the revolt and rid himself of traitors. However, in a strange twist of events, Mehmed was bested by Çandarlı’s last play. Defeated, Mehmed knelt before his father Sultan Murad, and surrendered. Although successful in this particular fight, it was owing to Çandarlı’s defeat that Mehmed was ultimately exiled for his trouble, an inconsequential hurdle.

His exile was only a hasty interruption in his great ascend to power. The ember of ambition was still very much alive beneath the surface. One day, he would come back and reclaim his place as Sultan, and so he started smoothing out the wrinkles of his return. For Sultan Mehmed, this restoration was an ideal of sociopolitical order that he would not rest until establishing, so when the opportunity arose again, conquering the city of Istanbul was returned as an objective to him. He was just getting started on an even bigger chapter that would reshape the Osmanli Empire as it was known.
